Hi Godfrey,
It is very true that the inter-class matches in our time was hotly contested. If my memory serves me right, I feel the match was played between the IX and X standards.I remember the incident very well. That particular day the goal-posts were without the nets because of which there was a dispute. Derrick hit the ball with such lightning speed that the umpire could not judge whether the ball enter the goal or went out as the goal-keeper who advanced blocked the view of the umpire. The umpire took a decision and did not give the goal. Derrick was upset with the decision as he was sure that the ball entered the goal.Fr.Netto was in charge of Derrick's team.Since the team lost,Fr. instigated Derrick to protest and have a replay match.Sir.Oliver Andrade put his foot down and said that the umpire decision was final.Derrick,I belive met Teacher Mabel to convince Sir to have a replay match.Sir did like Derrick's attitude and did not give in.The following year Derrick did not want to play for the school.Sir,although he missed an excellent player, was not worried as the school had a number of players who could replace any player in the team. There would have been another story if the nets had been put.
Godfrey, I remember the Chapel road "uncles" and also the Don Bosco players that you have mentioned Alban Monteiro( a great enemy of Peter Fernandes ), Diago D'Souza and Cedric Rocha, brother of Mario Rocha, who was a great left outter, who played for Mafatlal and Maharashtra. The year we lost the Aga Khan Cup in (1962),Diago, who played left outter, scored the goal.Sir had warned Alex, who played right back,to take care of Diago. Right enough towards the end of the match, Diago collected a pass, he scooped the ball over Alex's stick and scored the goal

Joe Dinshaw's team of 1960 won Aga Khan beating Don Bosco by a solitary goal scored by Dominic Fonseca.
whilst Joe and some of the boys passed out in 1960,Menino,Peter,Evangelisto,Dominic and Agnello retained their places the following year and figured in Peter's team
that won in 1961.One notable omission from the team that won in 1960 was the absence of glamour boy Derrick D'mello.
Derrick, a genial personality from a small railway town of
Dhaund, voluntarily stepped down from the 1961 team, following an incident in an inter class finals match, for reasons best known to a few of us, old enough to remember.
Inter class matches in our time, were hotly contested affairs fought with the same intensity as an India-Pak cricket match.
Surely the replacements in Peter's team were good enough to retain Aga Khan in 1961. I always felt that Derrick's inclusion would have given the side that extra cutting edge.
We lost 2-1 that year to Don Bosco in the final of the Dr. Viegas cup, a final marred by the most bizarre umpiring ever witnessed on a hockey maidan.Inept umpires who failed to apply the advantage rule and who could not correctly interpret the "3 players" offside rule , prevalent in our time. Don Bosco , of course had some brilliant players in the persons of Alban Monteiro, Diago D'Souza and Cedric Rocha.
Looking back, some 50 years later, I feel that fairness could have prevailed, had some of our senior players like Peter, Agnello ,and John Menezes together with Fr. Netto(a staunch "Boarders" priest) intervened, and sorted out a trivial matter which could have been amicably resolved.
I did have the opportunity of watching Derrick from the sidelines at Donnelly Gym. displaying his usual prowess in the Inter class matches in 1960-61.
A bustling forward who would veer to his left and reverse flick the ball with lightning speed to his better placed forwards.
Frank and Peter.... do you remember the Chapel road "uncles" who would take their places behind the goal adjacent to the shed, supporting their heroes and placing bets.
Small bets really, like a pack of cigarettes or a "Chai" at the local hindu hotel.Peter Biggs always referred to it as the Bhaja shop.
Great guys to have met and known.
Joe,Derrick, Peter, Frank,Gerson,Menino,Agnello,Alex,Rudy,Santan, Lawrence,Aloysius,Nobbie,Noel Henriques.
To all you guys, thanks for the memories.
