St. Stanislaus Teachers Healthcare 2011

jds1.jpg

Dear Stanislites,

It my pleasure to share with you that we have successfully completed 5 years of our Teachers’ Healthcare Initiative thanks to your support. What started off as a small noble idea initiated by a group of our alumni has grown and touched the lives of 126 retired and serving teachers and workers of our school who have been covered for Rs 1 lakh each. Our teachers have relentlessly contributed in so many unseen ways to make us what we are today. It just goes to prove how a little thoughtfulness and a small push can do wonders to people around us.

I once again appeal to you to join us to raise an amount of Rs. 5 Lakhs, estimated to be the premium for this year, towards the St. Stanislaus Teacher Healthcare initiative. Since the policy expires on 31st October 2011, we need to achieve the target before 25th of October 2011.

Help Spread the Word! I request all of you to help spread the word with other Alumni you are connected with over email or Facebook. Rs. 4000 is the approximate amount that pays the healthcare premium of one teacher for one year. Let’s all work together and get at least one Alumni to contribute for one teacher’s healthcare.

Cheque Payments Open
I urge you to donate generously and assist us pay the healthcare premium before 31st October 2011. You can currently donate by cheque. Please make cheque payable to “St. Stanislaus Ex-students Association” and mail the cheque to the address below.

Online Payment
A new set of rules made applicable on Paypal by RBI, has resulted in Paypal not accepting any payments for donations. We are currently in advanced talks with Payment Gateway services, and we should be able to integrate a gateway which will accept electronic payments shortly.

Dr. Keki Gharda visits his Alma Mater

Presented the autographed novel by Principal Fr Jude Fernandes SJ

Dr. Keki  Gharda (Class of 1941) an octogenarian and an ex-student,  visited his Alma Mater on Tuesday, 13th September 2011.

Dr Gharda is a prominent Indian chemical engineer, chemist and entrepreneur. He is the founder, chairman and managing director of Gharda Chemicals Limited, an R&D-based company with business interests in agrochemicals, polymers and pigments. He got his Chemical engineering degree in 1950 from Bombay University, Masters from University of Michigan and Ph.D from University Of Oklahoma.

Dr Keki Gharda
As Dr. Gharda walked down memory lane he had small anecdotes to mention about his prime School days to the Principal Fr. Jude Fernandes.

Being a book lover and a voracious reader, he visited the School library and was proud to see it updated.

He was also glad to see his Alma Mater a heritage structure still stand out loud and tall.

St Stanislaus win Independence Day football

Independence Day 0901.jpg

The day began early at 7.45am with the hoisting of our National Flag and singing of our National Anthem

The alumni of St. Mary's (ISC), Holy Family HS Andheri and St. Stanislaus HS Bandra assembled at St. Stanislaus HS Bandra to celebrate our Independence Day with gusto. Jesuit school rivalries were re-ignited on the football field when grown men turned boys once again and played some very entertaining football.

Matches were 20 minutes per half with no half time and rolling substitutions. St. Mary’s (ISC) fielded an "A" and "B" team. The first match was played between the very strong and experienced St. Mary's "A" and a young Holy Family. The class of St.  Mary's was evident in the 6-1 score line. The next match was played between St. Stanislaus and St. Mary's "B". The young Marians were no match for the very fast and skillful Stanislites who won 5-1. The match for the third place was played between St. Mary's "B" and Holy Family. The match was fast and evenly fought till Holy Family broke the deadlock and went on to score two more before St. Mary's "B" pulled one back.

The stage was now set for the final between St. Mary's "A" and St. Stanislaus. St. Mary's immediately realized that they had a tough match on hand and played some uncompromising football. The match was most evenly poised till some delightful passing between the Stanislite forwards resulted in the first goal. St. Mary's fought back and they pressed forward and were foiled by some good goal keeping and the goal post. The second half began at a fast pace and gradually the St. Stanislaus mid-field pressed forward and the Stanislites missed a number of  easy chances. On the day, St. Stanislaus emerged the deserving winners. They thus ended the unbeaten streak of St. Mary's (ISC) of the last three years.

SSESA AGM 2011

 SSESA Managing Committee 2011-14

The 25th SSESA AGM was held on 31-July 2011 in the School Museum. The AGM was well attended with active participation from all present. The overwhelming feeling of the General Body was the urgent need to change the age profile of not only the Managing Committee but also those who attend the AGM. There was an urgent need to attract young alumni.

In his welcome address the President, Fr Jude Fernandes SJ spelt out the vision for our school and the number of new initiatives that had been initiated at the school to offer quality education for all. He spoke about the Jesuit Certificate Program that has been implemented at the seven Jesuit Schools in Mumbai. The certificate was based on the SIPS frame work - Social-Intellectual-Personal-Spiritual development of the child. Fr Jude mentioned that the Intellectual component was being run by our very own alumni Mr Venkatesh Srinivisan (1987) who is an alumnus of IIM-Ahmedabad and McKinsey & Company - a global management consulting firm. Venkatesh had dropped out from his high profile job to give back to his school.

Fr Jude stated that while it was important to start such programs, it was critical in the long run to sustain such programs financially. He stated it was important that alumni come forward and help support such programs in whatever way they could. This was in the context of the up-coming 2013 sesquicentenary (150 years) celebrations. He expected alumni to play a pivotal role in the celebrations and called upon alumni to volunteer in their field of expertise.

The new Managing Committee was elected for the period 2011-14 at the AGM. There are five new faces in the Committee and the General Body wished them well and hoped they would carry out the good work of the previous committees.

SSESA Lonavla Picnic 2011

Lonavla 2011 021.jpg

It was another fun filled three days with loads of rest and relaxation that was the highlight of this year’s SSESA Lonavla picnic. The St. Stanislaus Villa at Lonavla never fails to refresh our city souls. The start of the monsoon rains added to the lushness of the foliage at the villa. This year’s heavy rains allowed only minor treks which were still refreshing encounters with Mother Nature.

Charles (1967) and Mohini Dias celebrated their 27th wedding anniversary at this year’s Lonavla picnic. It was touching to learn that they chose to celebrate with their fellow Stanislites in Lonavla. There was fun and games and dancing and lots of good food. Thanks to Ronnie Mascarenhas and Royce D'silva who sponsored a delicious dinner on our first day at Lonavla.

This year’s picnic like the last two picnics would never have happened thanks to the tireless efforts of Denzil Rego (1975) and Jeffery Gonsalves (1963). Special thanks to the Rego family for their thoughtfulness while helping organize the picnic.

St Stanislaus School pay homage to famous alumni Leo Pinto

pinto51.jpg

by Pradeep Vijayakar (Class of 1966)

Mumbai: Students of the St Stanislaus High School Bandra observed a minute's silence when school opened on Wednesday morning as homage to a famous alumni,India's oldest surviving Olympian, Leo Pinto, who passed away at the age of 96 on Tuesday.Later a few schoolboys carried the school flag and created an arch of hockey sticks as the coffin was taken from St Francis D'Assisi Church to the St Peters seaside cemetery.

At the mass, Fr Jude Fernandes SJ, Principal of St Stanislaus, Pinto's Alma Mater, said the player with his Olympiad deeds, had vindicated the school's motto, `Natus Ad Majora' which meant 'Born for Greater Things'.

After the service Pinto's granddaugher read a tribute recalling  her grandfather's genial nature. No wonder the church was full, as if entire Bandra had turned up.
Before the body was lowered into the grave the students of St Stanislaus and their sports director Hycinth Cardoz , sang the schools anthem after which the people paid respects to daughter Susan and son Darryl.

A host of sportsfolk from Tata Sports Club led by billiards ace Mike Ferreira, Anu D'Cruz, Apanna, Gilbert and Clarence Lobo and players of a later era like Diago D'Souza were present. Ferreira summed up the feelings of the players when in his tribute he said, "I had the good fortune of being with Leo Pinto for a long time during my job with Tomco and again when Pinto worked with the Billiards and Snooker Association of Maharashtra. I never ever saw him sad." From Hockey Olympians of the 60s like Kulwant Arora, to those of later years like Mervyn Fernandes, Joaquim Carvalho(a Stanislite), Mir Ranjan Negi,Viren Rasquinha (a Stanislite) and Dhanraj Pillay  were there to lift the coffin

Jesuit Certificate Progra

The Jesuit vision for 21st century transformational education has been discussed by Jesuit educators for some time now. The Educational Council in recent discussions decided that it was time for an initiative to add greater inputs to students of Jesuit schools through a supplementary program to the current schooling system based on curricula such as ICSE/ SSC, in particular the SSC where the common consensus was that the education was not in step with the needs of the time. It was agreed that a mere shift to a new system such as IB would not only likely compromise the need for equity which was the driving philosophy behind remaining within the government aided system, a decision taken earlier; but would not likely meet Jesuit needs of holistic and integrated development of both intellect and human values. Hence a decision was taken to build a formal supplementary program tailored to the Jesuit needs of transformational education as outlined in the seminal document on 21st century transformational Jesuit education.

Yugantar- Teacher Workshop

Yugantar- Teacher Workshop

Yugantar (New Era)- Teacher Workshop was held on 17th and 24th April by alumni Venkatesh Srinivasan (Class of 1987) of Livewire Learning.

The workshop was focused on two aspects of the teacher’s life; one- the teacher as an individual and two-the teacher as a professional.

The modules for the teacher as an individual focused on Stress Management by Staying Alert, Personal and Financial Security and Time Management.

The modules for the teacher as a professional focused on the changing world around us and how the teacher could harness the changes for his/her own development. The future of education in India and its implications for a teacher’s career and the need for self development in core subject areas/ functional areas were discussed.

Finally the teachers were given some time to introspect and put down their goals, aspirations and action plans in both the personal and professional spheres as an outcome of the workshop.
